Here’s a guide to check if your Aadhaar is active or deactivated

Nearly 81 lakh Aadhaar cards have been deactivated till now by UIDAI. How to check if your card is one of them? Due to some or the other reasons, there’s a possibility of your card being deactivated. In a scenario like this, it is important to figure out the status of your Aadhaar card.

Although there are a number of reasons why your card could be deactivated, it is important to know those reasons which have been stated in Section 27 and 28 of the Aadhaar Regulations, 2016. Here’s a list of reasons listed below –
• If it is found that you have more than one Aadhaar numbers, then the number assigned from your first enrolment shall be considered, and all subsequent Aadhaar numbers would be cancelled
• In a case of photo on photo where the core biometric information isn’t clearly stated and an existing photo is used for enrolment instead of capturing a new photograph at the centre, and also where the biometric information hasn’t been captured during the enrolment process, the individual’s Aadhaar number would be cancelled
• Your Aadhaar number could be cancelled in the case where an adult has been enrolled as a child below the age of 5 years in order to avoid capturing of biometric information
• If in case the enrolment procedure has been carried out without valid documents, the Aadhaar number would be deactivated until it is updated by the owner of that Aadhaar number
• In a scenario where a child has attained an age of 5 years or 15 years and he/she fails to update his biometric information within 2 years of attaining such age, then the Aadhaar number would be deactivated. In a few cases where an update has not been carried out at the expiry of one year after deactivation, then the Aadhaar number will get omitted
At a time where Aadhaar has been made mandatory for a lot of reasons, the deactivation for so many people has become a matter of concern. Nonetheless, if you want to check whether your Aadhaar is valid or not, here are few simple steps to ascertain the same:
• Login into the website of UIDAI i.e. http://www.uidai.gov.in
• On the website’s homepage, you’d find an option that would say Verify Aadhaar number. This information would be available as a sub-section in the Aadhaar Services category. Once you click on that link, it will redirect you to a new portal – https://resident.uidai.gov.in/aadhaarverification
• After clicking on the “verify” option, you will be able to see the status of your Aadhaar number. You will be able to notice that along with the Aadhaar number, it will also show your age, gender, state and contact number’s last four digits that are linked to the Aadhaar card
• In case you end up feeding the wrong Aadhaar number, the page will display the pop-up as “doesn’t exist” towards the end of the verification process
With this, if you notice that your Aadhaar number is deactivated, you may perhaps reactivate it, but do remember that reactivating procedure cannot be processed online, and you’d have to personally visit the enrollment centre for this purpose.
